If you have ever booked a removal or a van for a delivery and then watched the final invoice creep upwards, you will know the feeling. The number quoted on the phone rarely matches the number you pay when nobody has spelled out what is included. In Bromley and across South East London, the difference is usually not sharp practice — it is simply an itemised quote versus a rough estimate given in a hurry.
A good local haulage quote is a working document. It should tell you what is being moved, how far, how long it will take, who is carrying it, and which extra costs sit on top of the basic price. Whether you are shifting a three-bedroom semi in Petts Wood or relocating a small workshop near Orpington, you should be able to read the quote and predict the final figure with confidence.
Ask any reputable firm to break the price down rather than give a single lump sum. Get them to think in terms of:
Insurance is where cheap quotes quietly fall apart. There are two separate covers to check, and they do different jobs.
Goods in transit insurance protects your belongings while they are on the vehicle. Ask for the level of cover per load and per item, and whether high-value pieces such as a piano, a large television or artwork need to be declared separately.
Public liability insurance covers damage to property — a scuffed banister, a chipped doorframe, a cracked tile in a hallway. Ask whether the firm holds it and request the policy details in writing. A genuine operator will send them over without hesitation.
One more point: check whether the cover applies to the crew doing the lifting, or only to the company. Subcontractors are common in this trade, and their insurance is not always the same as the firm you booked.
If you want boxes, tape, bubble wrap, mattress covers and wardrobe cartons supplied, say so at quoting stage. Some firms include a packing service, some charge per box, and some expect you to supply everything yourself. The total price should reflect whichever option you have chosen.
Access is the other big variable, and it is worth being honest about it. Narrow Victorian terraces around Shortlands and Chislehurst, shared driveways, steep garden steps, communal hallways, and lifts that need booking with a building manager all add minutes that turn into hours. Mention them upfront and the quote will be realistic. Leave them out and you cannot blame the estimator for a surprise.
When you have two or three figures in front of you, compare like with like. Check that both include VAT, or that both exclude it. Check that both cover the same number of crew and the same hours. Check that both include the same insurance cover and the same materials.
A quote £80 cheaper that excludes VAT, materials and parking permits is not cheaper at all. If one firm will not put anything in writing, or will not answer a direct question about insurance, treat that as your answer. The best quote is rarely the lowest — it is the one that matches reality on moving day.
Once you are happy, ask for the quote to be confirmed by email, with the date, arrival window, crew size and total cost stated clearly. Check the cancellation terms and any deposit arrangement, and confirm how you should pay on the day.
For anything going into storage in South East London, ask how long the items stay on the vehicle, where they are held, and how access works if you need something back sooner. A short, clear written confirmation removes almost every argument later. It also gives you a single number to hold the firm to, which is exactly what a good quote is for.
Clean and dry furniture before storage, use covers to block dust and leave gaps for airflow. Raise items off concrete floors to prevent damp damage over time.
